If you love history, you would be hard-pressed to find a more rewarding place to study than the history program at Northern. We are small enough to know our students by name, yet big enough to open doors and provide some great opportunities. We work hard in our department, but the faculty and students love what we do.

Our four full-time faculty members are recognized teachers and scholars. Our strengths are in American and European history, though we have courses that are both richly cross-cultural and global in nature. Your history training at Northern can lead to any number of careers. Some of the commonly chosen ones are education, government, public history and law.

If you want a career in education, then a B.S.Ed. in history or a B.S.Ed in social science education and a teaching credential from Northern will launch your career. Have you dreamed of foreign travel, or work in international affairs? A history degree is one of the most sought-after degrees for work in the State Department, CIA and related agencies. Maybe museum or archive work interest you; we've got you covered there, too. Sign up for a B.A. in history and add a public history certificate, and you are ready for B.A.-level entry job or for a smooth transition to graduate school.

A handful of majors can prepare students to shine on the law school entrance (LSAT) and law school itself; history is a great one. Many of our graduates have gone on to complete graduate training in history in history departments across the country. History at Northern is especially well suited in this regard as in your classes you will actually be creating history - interpreting sources, arguing points, and making arguments. You will not be filling in ovals or answering “T” or “F” on your history exams at Northern!
