Northern¡¯s student health services are provided at Avera St. Luke¡¯s State Street Medical Square.

Northern students who call before 2 p.m. are guaranteed same-day sick visits. Students who call after 2 p.m. will be guaranteed an appointment the following day.

An Avera employee will schedule your appointment and give you directions to the clinic at 105 S. State St. Please let the Avera employee know if you need transportation. 
 

Walk-in appointments will be accommodated, but to ensure an efficient and timely visit, please schedule an appointment when possible.
 

When you come to Avera for an appointment, please bring the following:

Convenient Care

At Avera, students will receive quality care and services in an abundance of ways, including:

• Extended hours of 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
• Availability of onsite services such as lab, imaging, vaccines, pharmacy, and more
• Prescriptions filled inside at Avera State Street Pharmacy, inside the clinic building
• Quick lab turnaround times
• Direct access to physicians
• Options for appointment times and optional virtual visits
• Assessment and treatment of acute or sudden-onset illness or injury
• Lab testing (urine screening, strep throat, blood count and mono screening), free when the tests are determined necessary by the physician assistant
• Over-the-counter medications for common colds, sore throat, cough, and headaches
• Medical equipment such as crutches, vaporizers, and cold/hot packs (available for checkout)
• Informational and referral services assistance upon request
   

Discounted Services

There is no charge to the student for a 15-minute visit with a provider. Free services also include:

• Urine analysis
• Urine culture and sensitivities
• Mononucleosis screen
• Complete Blood Count (CBC) test
• Throat culture
• Pregnancy test
   

Avera Same-day Sick Visits 

Avera's same-day sick visits and after-hours care can treat a broad range of issues, including:

• Sore throat
• Cough
• Cold/flu symptoms
• Covid symptoms
• Fever
• Sinus congestion
• Ear pain
• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
• Rash
• Burns (minor)
• Mild or seasonal allergies
• UTI
• Bumps, cuts, scrapes
• Headaches (minor)
• Sprains and strains
• Stomachache (mild abdominal pain)
• Insect bites
• Animal bites (minor)
   

Immunizations

To protect and improve the health and wellbeing of campus, all new students enrolling at Northern for the first time must present appropriate certification from a licensed physician that the student has received or is in the process of receiving the required two doses of immunization against measles, rubella, and mumps. Students may do so through their Admissions Counselor available at admissions@northern.edu or 605-626-2544 or by contacting Anna Weisser, Immunization Compliance Coordinator at hlthser@northern.edu.

Documentation must be provided within 45 days after the start of classes. Failure to comply will result in the student being administratively removed from all courses without a refund.

Health Insurance (students) 

All students are encouraged to have and maintain health insurance. Choosing not to purchase health insurance may negatively impact students and their financial future.
Northern State University does not offer student health insurance. If not currently insured by a parent or guardian, students may purchase health insurance through the Government Health Insurance Exchange.

All student athletes must have a primary health plan approved by the University.

Foreign National students, except for those entitled to establish a legal domicile in South Dakota, who have enrolled at Northern, are required to purchase a university approved health insurance plan. Spouse and dependents are also required to have proof of insurance and must submit this to their university representative by the census date, as outlined in the academic calendar. All students participating in a university affiliated international activity must purchase the Board of Regents endorsed study abroad insurance plan.
